What's the catch?
Clive and Beth Macaulay Clive and Beth Macaulay have been busy convincing friends there's no catch to the Murray Energy home assessments they've recently benefited from. The Mulwala couple were so impressed about the advice gained during an assessment on their home, they pro-actively spread the word, encouraging others to do the same. Word of mouth is a powerful tool, in the Macaulay's rural neighbourhood alone, around 30 neighbours and friends have all had energy assessments, and the list is growing. "It was terrific, because a lot of things we were doing were wrong but we didn't realise," Mr Macaulay said. "You often go along doing the same thing day in, day out and not realise there's a better way to go, so when you can have somebody come into your home, sit down and go through everything, it's great. "We went through the whole lot, from the water heating to clothes drying, fridges, everything that you could think of." The assessment revealed that energy savings could quickly be made by installing energy efficient light globes and adapting the temperature of the hot water service. "It turns out our water was too hot," Mr Macaulay said. "We never had it tested before and were surprised to find our hot water was 68 degrees when it should be 60 degrees, so we've had our thermostat reduced. "Next on our list is installing better shower heads, because we've probably been using more water than we need to. We've also been given a shower timer to keep our showers under four minutes, so that will help especially when other people come and stay over Christmas." The couple is also aware that turning appliances, including the television, off at the power switch will also add up to significant savings over time. The Macaulays were impressed about the level of information they received, but chuckle that it takes some time to convince friends there's no catch! "They're not trying to sell you anything, just give you good advice on how you can save money and be more energy efficient," Mr Macaulay said. "After all, we could be going on for years doing the same thing and it could be wrong, at least by having an assessment, we can get on the right track." |
